Murray Lawlor, owner operator of Coombs Country Candy has been bringing sweet treats to the Alberni Valley for over 15 years.
Murray got his start in a family run candy store in Niagara Falls, Ontario, where he grew up. The Dutch family that owned the company taught him a lot about making sweet treats and at the age of 21 he headed west. Once on the lower mainland he got to work learning all he could about his craft from the experts he met along the way. Soon he set up his own company. His big break came when he opened up "Old World Fudge" on Granville Island in Vancouver. Murray has had over 20 locations at one time, including markets at Pike Place in Seattle, USA and the Hudson's Bay store in Vancouver, B.C.
You may find Murray and his copper pot at home shows and fall fairs up and down Vancouver Island.
Murray opened Coombs Country Candy's first store in 1993 in the Coombs Emporium, next door to the famous, goats on the roof, Coombs Market. Here they did business for over 15 years.
In the spring of 1994, Murray and his wife, Lenore, first saw the property at the entrance to the Alberni Valley, on highway #4. They were struck by the great potential, being isolated but also offering amazing exposure and a great profile. They purchased the property and set about developing this site.
